What Causes Enlarged Lymph Nodes, Tonsils With White Pus And Sore Throat?
Question: Dear Doctor,
8 weeks ago, I had 3 sexual encounters: unprotected oral with 3 different guys. No other encounters since that week.
This week I was told that I have Tonsillitis; however I am worried that this has been caused by the sexual encounters of 8 weeks ago.
I am currently taking Zinnat 500mg tablets 1-0-1 for 7 days, just took the 3rd tablet this morning.
Have enlarged lymph nodes, tonsils with white pus, sore throat, occasional ear pain and headaches etc...
Provided that I heal from this tonsillitis, would that mean that the infection died, or would I still require STD testing as soon as possible?
My next STD screening is in November, was thinking of calling and reschedule for next week.
Would Zinnat 500mg alter the STD results?
Kindest regards,

Brief Answer:
I suggest std test now
Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
It may be caused by chlamydia or gonorrhea and I suggest std testing now, even before antibiotic treatment is over. You should do swab test to isolate exact microbe and then antibiotic can be switched if necessary. once it is healed, then there is no more infection. Wish you good health.

The thing is that the clinic would not accept appointments this week, and since I am on antibiotics until Thursday, the only available day would be the next day which is Friday.
It would only be possible to test on the 19th of September. What should I do?
I am worried sick about this.

Dear Doctor,
The only symptoms which I have is pain of tonsills when swallowing, dehydration (am drinking lots of fluids to prevent that). Dehydration makes swallowing more difficult, also suspecting post nasal drip of thick mucus at the back of my throat, and slight ear pain when swallowing, also might have congested ears at times, and congested nose. No fever.
It all started on the 13th while I was on a break, exposed to a lot of sun, by the pool (where I might have swallowed pool water) and had smoked tabaco (without a filter): had a slight runny nose and sneezing.
15th: dry cough which went away in 1-2 days
16th: cheek pain, headaches and congested ears (sinuses?)
17th: started to experience pain due to a lump which was coated with white mucus at the far back of my tongue, left side. The pain was gone after 5-7 days, size of the 'lump' decreased drastically and white mucus is gone.
23rd: started experiencing pain when swallowing due to swollen tonsills
24th: noticed white spots on tonsils (white mucus)
25th: was given zinnat 500mg 1-0-1.
By reading all of this, would you think it's something serious?
Apologies for the detailed description.
Thanks,
M

Brief Answer:
hi
Detailed Answer:
Hi. I dont think this is serious and tonsilitis of any kind is usually benign and treatable. All this sounds to e more like simple streptoccocal tonsilitis and it is not likely to be caused by STD microbes. Just finish your antibiotic course, avoid smoking, and have vitamin C supplements.

Hi again, thanks for your previous reply,
This is my 4th day of Antibiotics, still 3 days left to go, and everything seems to be improving.
Also I would like to ask when the white spots on tonsils, and the size of the tonsils will go back to normal?
Should I assume that fhe infection is going away, and rule out any chances that this could have been std related?
Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
Changes on tonsils may persist for few more weeks
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Changes on tonsils may persist for few more weeks after it is healed.
Zinnat would be effective against Gonnorhea but not against clamydia. So it may be gonnorhea tonsilits- However, it doesnt matter.

So therefore since symptoms have improved and I feel like I am getting better, it means that whatever the infection was is dying, and I won't have to worry any longer?
I greatly appreciate your answers doctor.
The ENT gave me 3 days further of Zinnat and prescribed me with Difflam gargle.
Thanks and regards .
