What Causes Excess Blood In Urine, Enlarged Prostate And Mass In Bladder?

default

Question: Hello,

This question is not for me - it is for my father. Age: 63. He recently noticed a large volume of blood in his urine and went to the hospital where they found a significantly enlarged prostate, UTI, and incidentally noticed a small mass attached to the bladder wall. PSA is normal. Last week he underwent a succesful TURP and the small mass in the bladder was also removed (according to the urologist it was entirely removed along with part of the muscle) and sent to pathology. Pathology results are not yet available. The procedure was done on the 5th of May and post-op period has been uneventful so far with the blood decreasing in the urine, however it has still not gone away completely. Today there is still a few drops of blood accompanied by brief pain immediately after urination. Is this normal? What are the warning signs to look out for in this situation? No other significant medical or family history, no long-term meds. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
It is normal to get little bleeding after TURP surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your father has undergone endoscopic surgery of TURP for enlarged prostate and mass in the bladder.since then he is getting little bleeding per urethra.

During resection of Prostate and any bladder mass a raw is being created after the resection of prostate and tumor .It is natural and normal to have oozing of blood from the this raw surface which gets resolved gradually and spontaneously within 3 weeks time.

Only one has to ensure is to drink more water and take antibiotics advised by Urologist to prevent infection.

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Thank you, Dr. XXXXXXX I have a few other questions as well if you don't mind-

If the pathology report says that the tumor is malignant, and assuming they were able to remove all of it during the first procedur, what would be the next step and the prognosis? Would chemo be indicated to be safe? What is the risk of recurrence?

Secondly, how can we be sure that they managed to get it all? Would a full body scan of some sort be required?

Thanks again. e

Brief Answer:
Further line of treatment will depend upon biopsy report .

Detailed Answer:
hello
Thanks for query.
Let the biopsy report come .Further treatment will depend upon the grade of the tumor, infiltration in muscle layer or peri vascular tissue .

It is practically impossible to remove each and every cell of the tumor.

Full body scan is not required at this stage ,It will be decided on the biopsy report.

Thanks and Regards.
