What Causes Excessive Sweating, vomiting And Weakness After Passing Stool?
Question: About four times in the last 1 1/2 years this has happened. I may or may not be constipated at the time. I sit on the toilet, push to evacuate the bowel and begin to sweat porfusley... my bowels empty, sometimes I vomit and all the while the sweat is pouring off of me faster and I am soaked and feel extremely weak in the limbs. Because I am 68 years old and live alone -- three times i have called paramedics to get me to the hospital. Hospital conclusions are unhelpful... they always give fluids interveiniously and send me home after I've been rehydrated. What am I doing to cause this... I can't keep bothering the hospital, but I can't help wondering if I will get better without emergency care.

Hello!
Thank you for the query.
Pushing on stool can cause blood pressure drop. If you push hard on stool, you perform Valsalva maneuver. This maneuver is sometimes used in heart issues diagnostics.
The other thing is why you have constipation. Hypothyroidism can be the reason. However you need to know that at your age, colon cancer should be ruled out at first.
Here is what you should do:
- have thyroid tests
- consult cardiologist, have stress test and heart ECG
- get scheduled for colonoscopy
Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you Dr. Stanko, My doctor does have me do yearly blood tests including a thyroid test and my colon was clear at a colonoscopy mid-last year. I will follow your suggestion and see a cardiologist for the stress test and heart ECG as you suggest.
Also, as I waited for your answer I typed in "perfuse sweating and weak legs. One of the suggestions was a need for B12. This reminded me that I had not taken my B12 for the last 6 weeks while visiting my daughter. I took it and will be more aware now. Another possible idea from the internet could possibly be a (strange word) and small stroke. Do you agree?
Again many thanks, and I will follow your suggestion.

Detailed Answer:
Perfuse sweating and weak legs are typical reaction for low blood pressure. Please note that due to low blood pressure Sympathetic nervous system gets activated. Adrenaline is secreted to the blood stream, blood vessels in the limbs, skin, intestines get constricted, sweat is produced and many more. So sweating and weak legs are very common in case of sudden blood pressure drop.
B12 deficiency would give elevated MCV in your blood work. Moreover, it would not give sudden attacks. Rather constant weakness would be present.
Stroke (TIA) usually gives one side weakness (like left arm and leg). So stroke is rather hardly possible.
