What Causes Fatigue While Suffering From Low Vitamin B12 Levels?

Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: Thank you,
I went to my doctor about 3 week ago and asked her to check my B-12 because I have been so fatiqued everyday even after vacation I just do not have any energy and I always have. Both of my feet also get "charlie horses" in them constantly. I was told to just take a B-12 pill and wait. Well I was so tired and have a lot to do with my daughter graduating from college so I went in for blood work again this Monday.
Three week ago my B-12 level was 199. When my Doctor called my last night she said the pills are working because my B-12 is now 1,066. That seems like a very substantial jump in numbers and I did not take my B-12 all weekend.
What would you advise?

Brief Answer:
Slightly above normal level but no harm.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
The normal blood B12 level is 200- 900 pg/ml.
Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin and the slight excess you have will be excreted by the kidneys and so there is nothing to worry.
You don't require the supplement now.
Do get back to me if you have further queries.
Wish you good health and a great day.

My sistr has to take B-12 shots and that was what I thought we were doing. You would not question the almost ,1000. point jump in a couple of weeks. I would think that the lab made a mistake, because I sure am not feeling any better. If that is not it, what do you think is causing the sporadic cramping in my feet and my lack of energy, fatigued.

Brief Answer:
May be other causes for your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
There was no mention of the dose or frequency at which the injections were taken.
If you doubt the lab, have it checked in another lab.
B12 deficiency may not the only cause of your symptoms.
You would require to have further investigations.
Please upload the results of what you have done already and I shall get back to you with my opinion. I can also give you my suggestions on any other test that may be helpful in detecting the cause of your symptoms.
