What Causes Feeling Of Lump In The Throat And Difficulty In Swallowing?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Apr 2017
Question: Last Saturday night, I choked on a Clindamycin pill... since then, my tongue is white (bad taste in mouth, loss of appetite) and I feel like there's a lump in my throat. I'm also experiencing difficulty swallowing. I cannot swallow solid foods without feeling like I'm going to choke...it's a VERY uncomfortable feeling.

An ER doctor put me on Protonix for Acid Reflux on Tues. I'm feeling only a little bit of relief since then.

Bottom line: I'm on a liquid diet mostly, and yogurt...and I'm miserable! When should I expect to see an improvement in my symptoms?

PS: I was fine before I choked on the Clindamycin.. I was on the Clindamycin to treat an abscess on my gum and then got a root canal a few days later.

the lump seems to come and go a little bit, but the difficulty swallowing is always there. what might this mean?

Brief Answer:
Dysphagia

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to HealthcareMagic and thanks for putting up the query
difficulty in swallowing can't be due to abscess in the gum alone. There is probably some throat infection as well or possibly a throat abscess otherwise there should not be that much dysphagia that you need to be put on liquid diet.
My advice is you should get yourself examined by an ENT SPECIALIST or send me the pictures of your throat so that I can suggest you better.
Start using hexidine gargles.
Continue with the antacid.
Take an anti inflammatory tablet like a combination of diclofenac and seratiopeptidase twice daily
If you have fever take paracetamol.
Instead of clindamycin; take a combination of amoxicillin and clavulunate.
All the medicines I have prescribed will be available only on prescription.
If the symptoms still seem to worsen, visit an ENT SPECIALIST because an abscess if present might need some intervention.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thanks and regards

The ER doctor told me that the Clindamycin antibiotic is caustic and irritated my esophogus.. Did you miss that part of the story?.

Brief Answer:
Dysphagia

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for the follow up query.
Clindamycin can cause heartburn or sore throat. That's why I advised you to change your antibiotic. The symptoms are usually not this severe. So if on changing antibiotic and in spite of taking all medicines the symptoms don't improve it is better to get examined as there can be some concurrent problem.
It is better if you can send me the pictures of your throat.
The tongue deposits will get cleaned with hexidine mouthwash.
Any further questions are always welcome.
Thanks and regards
