What Causes Fever After Taking MMR Vaccine?

Question: Hi Doctor,
She is 16 months old
My Daughter was given the MMR vaccine..Last Saturday..Exactly after one week she got fever..that is from yesterday...ranging from 99 to 100 F...
Today we observed few measles..say 5 over her entire body
Is it common to have these after vaccine?
We are giving her 3ML of Calpol 250mg syrup...every 4hrs from yesterday..
Is it fine?
Why fever is not contained still?
or do we need to use any other medications?
pls advise

Brief Answer:
dont worry it will settle soon
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to health care magic.
MMR is a live attenuated vaccine containing measles, mumps and rubella .
The measles part can give rise to a minor fever and rash which can start few days after vaccination and can last for Upto a week.
Don't worry, it will settle soon.
All you need to do is continue calpol in the correct dose as you are giving now.
Calamine lotion like calapure can be applied over the rash.
No need for other medicines.
Ensure good intake atleadt liquids and urine output atleast 6 times daily.
Wishing speedy recovery.

Brief Answer:
Could be viral fever
Detailed Answer:
1. Constipation can happen as a result of water loss due to fever and less intake of water. This makes the stools hard .
2. You can continue calpol for 2 more days as long as she is active, playful without other symptoms. If she gets any other symptoms like cough, vomiting, etc, or if fever continues then you need to get her examined for other viral and bacterial fevers like malaria and typhoid etc
Ensure she drinks liquids frequently to keep her hydrated and to prevent constipation
