What Causes Fever And Fast Pulse Rate When Diagnosed With Lung Cancer?
Question: My brother, 68, has Stage IV Squamous cell lung cancer in both lungs, esophagus, and XXXXXXX They haven't put together a treatment plan for him yet; that comes Friday. Last night, I think he had a substantial fever, but I didn't take his temp. He sweated lots all night. Tonight, I have just taken his temp, and it's 102, with a pulse of 112. He took 1 tylenol. I think I should take him to the ER. He says wait an hour to see what his temp and pulse do before deciding. I don't know if this is an emergency or not. He is so tired he can barely walk or stay awake, but otherwise, seemed normal today, except for diarrhea 3 times in the night last night, but none today. Can't get his oncologist on the phone. What do you think?
Also he has lost over 40 lbs in the past few months, and is living on 2 or 3 small meal substitution drinks a day. It's 10:30 at night, and he will be more exhausted having to go to the ER right now and wait there for 4 hours while they do tests. Could it wait till the morning???

Brief Answer:
Hello dear. I think going to ER will help
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. From your description it seems , your brother is very sick. He requires blood investigations including some tests for infection. Also as his diet is low, he will require some intravenous fluids for maintaining nutrition and hydration.
A short course of early antibiotics is justified at this time.
I would prefer if he is admitted for a short stay. Also during this period, further management plan can be decided.
Feel; free to ask further.
Thanks and regards
