Question: I am an 80 yr old female with a sore throat, bad cough that is worse at night, very irritated eyes but no fever. I have had the symptoms for over a week and seem to be no better, if not worse. Should I go to a doctor?

Brief Answer:
Considerations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for the query.

Your symptoms sound suspicious for a viral upper respiratory infection. This will usually run its course in about 7-10 days.

You may have postnasal drainage which can trigger a cough when you lay down and also a sore throat. You could try a nasal spray such as Flonase or Nasonex which is available over the counter to help with nasal drainage.

If symptoms are no better or worse in 2-3 days you should try to see your physician for an in person Followup and exam.

Sincerely,

Dr Galamaga
