Welcome to Healthcare-magic
Greetings of the day
Dear Ms XXXXXXX
Being a Parent myself , I understand your concern and apprehension.
Let me reassure you things can be taken care off.
Whether weight of 6.9kg is alright at 8 months of age, opinion is possible when one knows what is the birth weight.
Baby weighs double the birth weight at send of 5 months and is three times its birth weight at end of 1st year. So kindly let me know what was the birth birth.
Also would draw your attention to one point. Children around age of 8 months start crawling, this is the time they get dentition. Also during this phase of development they tend to put each and everything in mouth(this is their way of exploring the world apart from 5 senses). Due to this habit, if unclean things are put in mouth it could lead to repeated Acute Gastro-enteritis.
As your baby has already had it twice, there tends to occur lactose intolerance(inability to digest milk sugar). It can last upto 2 weeks. So its advisable not to give plain cows milk for atleast 2 weeks, after which sequentially milk can be introduced.
In case he develops loose motion again, I would suggest you to get Stool examination doen.
I would advise the following diet to be given. I personally do not recommend Cerelac. I prefer home based Food
1. Khicdi and curds: Khicdi with curds and a spoon of desi ghee added: Curds is a natural probiotic and will help restore normal bacteria of colon and prevent further loose motion. Ghee is high calorigenic
2. Wheat Porridge/Dalia/Lapsi
3. Rice water
4. Dhal water
5. Simyl MCT Drops: 10 drops thrie a day. They contain Medium chain triglyceride absorption of whih is not affected even during loose motion and will help build up weight
6. Continue giving Breast feeding, till 12-15 months of age.
I would also share the following recipe which you can try, your kid will love it.
1.Veg soup:
Contents: tomato -2, potato-1small, Onion - 1 small, Carrot-1 small.
Preperation: Wash all veggies properly peel potato, onion and carrot. Boil tomato in water for 5 to 6 mins sothat u can see the skin of tomato cracks. Now gently remove skin of tomato. Add tomato and the peeled veggies to a cooker with 1/2 a glass of water. Add pinch of salt and whistle the cooker for 2 to 3 times (veggies shud be cooked well). Now bring it to room temp and blend them in a mixer. Strain the contents to remove any lumps and now boil the soup with cinammon sticks (1or 2piece very small one) added to it. Boil it till it reaches the required consistency and then feed LO.
Note:You can add any veggie to make this soup including leafy veggies like spinach, amaranthus, cabbage etc.
2.Pumpkin: Take peeled pumpkin. dice the pumpkin and then presure cook it with little salt. mash well with hands and feed it along with rice or as such.
3.Gourds (any ashgourd, rich gourd etc etc): Make it finger size and then pressure cook it or boil in water till it becomes soft. You can either feed as a finger food or you can mash it and feed it along with rice or as such.
4. Boiled potatos and carrots. Pressure cook well and mash it with hands and add pinch of salt and feed baby as such.
5. Caramalised plums: Peel the plum. Put it on hot tawa and get it caramalised on both sides and then feed it mashed. Apple also u acn do the same way.
6. Poached pear: peel and pit the pear. Take 1/2 glass of water and add cinammon sticks, grated garlic, cloves etc and bring it to boil. Slip the pears into this boiling fluid and cook until its soft and the fluid is just about to disappear. Now remove all the sticks garlic cloves etc from the fluid and mash the pear in the same fluid and can feed the lo. Its really yumm. And for elders you can add sugar and honey while boiling which makes it a decent desert.
7.Avocado apple puree. Take avocado and peeled and diced apple in equal qty and grind well in blender. Directly feed the baby.
8.Banana: Ripened banana made to thin long slices. Heat tawa add little butter or olive oil and then saute the banana until its soft. mash and feed. If you wish you can add bit of sugar or honey to this
9.Oats and apple breakfast: ground oats and diec apple. Boil apples until its soft and add ground oats cook until oats is done and a yumm breakfast is raedy.
10.Daal : Cook daal in cooker with salt and curry leaves added to it. Mash it add few drops of ghee and u can feed it either with rice or as such.
Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Thanx for your reply.I will definitely try the recepies told by you..
Doctor,My baby birth weight was 2.5 kg(born on 23 july 2013).When he was 6 month old,his weight was 6.5 kg but because of his sickness,he has become weak and at present weighs 6.90 kg...
Although at present,he is very active, makes sounds, says mama, papa and plays with toys...Also i want to mention that his milestones are a bit delayed...he has started to roll on both sides at 7.5 months when he was admitted to hospital...he cannot sit unsupported or crawl on its own..We have conducted his Test of Tandem Mass Spectrometry(TMS) and all his reports are normal. All his blood and urine reports and blood and urine cultures are normal.Although his Hb is only 8.5....Today only,we have started giving him iron drops(5 drops twice) on doctor's advise bcoz of recent illness...
Also doctor,my breast feed is not there so that we are at present giving him Formula Feed(Nestle's Lactogen).Earlier we were giving him Verka High Fat milk on advise of our Pediatrician but we stopped it and started formula feed(may be loose motions and vomiting was due to verka).
Doctor he also had cough last week, his fever was rising and falling(between 99 to 101) for 5 days and he also got viral exanthem on his face, stomach and back side. The fever used to be high in mornings and after giving him PCM drops,it used to come down. His motion frequency was only once or twice a day and his poop was like a mehndi mixed. We also gave him cefixime 100 mg suspension 3.5 ml for 7 days on advise of our paedetrician.
Now his cough is O.K but poop consistency is the same like a mixed mehndi(once a day only) and some chest resha is there(),so can i give him bananas...my family keeps on telling me that bananas causes resha,so donot feed him the same.Pls give your views on all the above points...
Banana can be given

Dear Ms XXXXXXX
Coming to the issue of his weight, he should be 7.5 kg by 1 year of age, as he is already 6.9 kg at 8 months. He will definitely have catch up growth( to make up the growth which had slowed during illness) and can achieve weight gain of more than 600 gms in next 4 months. So there is absolutely no reason to be worried about the weight. During every illness there may be slowing of growth, but in recovery phase there will definitely be catch up growth.
No two kids( even identical twins) have the same pace of achieving developmental milestones. During phase of illness, there may be slowness in achieving the milestones so there is absolutely no cause for concern. He will definitely pick up. Remember, kids are unique and not programmed machines that the particular milestone should occur exactly that point of time. The milestones can always occur plus or minus few weeks on either side of standard side of reference milestones. As the language milestones are achieved, slight delay in motor milestone will be rectified during catch up growth. Also one reassuring thing is majority of his investigations are within normal limits except low Hemoglobin.
Apart from Iron which you have already started , I would advise you to give him Multivitamin syrup especially one containing Zinc. Zinc deficiency is known to cause repeated loose motion.
For the rash over the chest , its likely to be due to Fever and sweating. Local application of Himalaya diaper rash cream followed by Himalaya powder application is helpful( Even though diaper rash is applied in diaper area, I have used it on my own baby and also prescribed others and found to be effective in rash due to fever and sweating).
I would advise you the following for cough
1. Once a day Nebulization with plain Normal saline
2. Wash the bed sheets and pillow in hot water to remove the dust. as dust and mites will cause repeated respiratory infection.
3. Tulsi leaves decoction in milk with turmeric, black pepper and ginger can be given for cough.
Bananas can be definitely be given. I advise my mothers to give their kids bananas, especially smashed banana+milk+sugar. It does not produce rash.
There are lot of orthodox food concepts imbibed in Indian culture and difficult to break.
Wishing your son a happy and healthy ife.
Do write to me for any further advise.

thanx for your reply...im deeply content with your reply regarding his weight...with a XXXXXXX of relief....Thank you so much...I was really worried, everyone calling him weak. Now im confident,my baby is very much healthy and not at all weak.Doctor,im already giving him multivitamin with zinc drops(1 ml OD),Ultra D3(CHOLECALCIFEROL) Drops(2 ml OD) and Iron drops(5 drops BD)...but doctor,he takes cerelac very happily. At present im giving him apple cheery cerelac and also moon dal-veg khichdi cerlac to him and he takes the same 3 times a day(around 85-90 ml each time)...Many times,i tried homemade khichdi to him which after taking 3 spoons,he rejects the same or spits the previously taken khichdi...so now i stopped giving...earlier he was taking suji kheer but at present,he does not take...So i started cerelac which he takes happily...pls advise....
Continue cerelac
Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms XXXXXXX
Kindly giving him Cerelac. Also do not give up on home made foods. In between try to introduce it. Have patience, keep trying various recipes. Babies will be developing their taste buds, so do experiment and find out what all does the baby life.
In the meantime keep giving Cerelac.
By one year of age, baby should be eating everything which is normally made at home, offcourse it should be more soft, less salty and spicy.
Do keep in touch.
Wish you all the best.
Happy to see a good mother like you.

Soup twice a day
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
I would suggest you to give soup twice a day. Apart from it other food can also be introduced.
There is absolutely no need to be worried. Keep trying what you kid likes.
Honey is not recommended in babies less than 1 year. After 1 year of age it can be safely be given. Honey is known to cause Botulinism in babies less than 1 year.

There is diurnal variation of temperature
Detailed Answer:
Namasthe
Dear Ms XXXXXXX
It's very good to know your baby is doing fine.
Coming to issue of temperature let me bring to your kind notice certain points. There is diurnal variation of temperature in both adults and children. It's more in children. Diurnal variations means the temperature fluctuates between certain range during the 24 hours cycle. In children it may vary between 98 to 99.5 °F . It's a normal variation in temperature which is quite common.
The temperature of the child will also depend on many factors like
1. Surrounding temperature
2. Clothing
3. Physical activity
If the child is wearing excessive layers of clothing and surrounding temperature is high it's body temperature may be higher. Remember a sick child with fever will not be play full. As your baby is playful there is absolutely no need to be worried about.
Adjusting a few things like removing the excessive layers of clothes , moving the baby to cooler atmosphere will definitely bring down the temperature. If the temperature is still above 99.5°F you can give Paracetamol.
One more thing is if the child is playful not sick looking then there is no need of taking temperature repeatedly. Mothers touch and experience is more valuable in knowing many things.
Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.
Take care Madam

When my baby was sleeping, there was sweat on his forehead and when he woke up,his temperature was 96.4...May be physical activity is the reason for his temperature rise..or may be climate changes(sometimes its very hot but in the morning, the climate is somewhat cooler. As far as his clothing is concerned,he is wearing a vest and half sleeve t shirt with cotton lowers.is it O.K?.im a first time mother sir,i donot want to see his temperature repeatedly but sometimes when i lift him up,i feel some warmness around his neck region....which compels me to take his temperature.....Pls advise...!!!
Clothing is appropriate
Detailed Answer:
Namasthe XXXX
I do understand your concern about your kid.
Being a first time mom, there are many firsts as a mom always wants to give the best to kids.
Warmness around the neck is totally normal. The air movement around the neck is restricted so its quite common to feel it warm. Look for temperature over forehead with back of your hand.
The clothing is quite appropriate. I would also recommend giving bath twice a day, fist oil massage( mixture of coconut oil+almond oil+ Olive oil in equal proportions). Massage for over 10-15 minutes. Give bath using warm water using Himalaya body wash. Application of Himalaya body lotion followed by himalaya baby powder will help maintaining temperature. Wiping the neck with wipes will also get down the temperature.
I assure you to be always around, if you need any assistance anytime.
Wishing you happy and safe motherhood.

Burp in upright position for 10 minutes
Detailed Answer:
Namasthe
XXXXX
The volume of stomach of baby is 10 m per kilogramme of body weight. His weight s 6.9 kg which is approx 7. So the volume of stomach is 7* 10= 70 ml.
So it will be advisable to give him 70 ml every feeds and feed him more often. Many of the mothers usually burp after completion of meals which may sometimes cause regurgitation. It will be a good idea to burp once during half of the meal and one at the end.
I need some clarification. Is is cows milk which you are giving? is it been given in feeder or using watti and spoon?
I would suggest you to feed him in sitting position ( as he will be able to sit at 8 months of age) by supporting his back with pillows. If you are feeding him cows milk, feed him using watti and spoon. Feeding using watti and spoon will not cause sudden distension of abdomen as the speed of intake is slow, whereas feeding through feeder the rate is faster.
Also burp him by placing him on your shoulder, maintaining him upright. Burp for good 10 minutes. Avoid rocking or jerky movements which will cause regurgitation.
Try it and it will definitely help.
Get back to me if you have any other issue or doubts.
Have a good day

Im giving him Formula milk(Lactogen) and other solid feeds in stainless steel bowl and spoon and in sitting position by placing pillow on his back.Sometimes i burp him upright on my shoulder and sometimes in his sitting position by patting his back as he feels comfortable.
Infact before preparing feed,i wash my hands with Dettol liquid soap.As far as hygeine is concerned,i clean my baby hands also with sanitizer 2 times as he keeps on sucking his fingers....His Toys are throughly sterilized and then i hand it over to him because sometimes,he rolls his tongue on them...I change his diapers every 3 hours and again wash my hands...As much as possible,i wash my hands before handling him.His nails also i cut regularly...
I take due care as much as possible because of his frequent illness...Vomiting is a very bad thing which i have experienced. It makes a child inactive and weak, sleeplessness, does not give response, frequently crying and waking after 15 to 20 minutes.Doctor, pls advise what should i do in case of vomitings and what medicine i can give at home only....??

Domperidone and lansoprozole will be effective
Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms XXXXXXX
The hygiene part is perfect, there is definitely no compromise in it.
Forget about the previous illness. Lets concentrate on his present and future health.
I would not prefer artificial feeds to be given to babies. You can consider introducing cows milk. In place of ceralac , use home based meals.
I would also suggest Motinorm drops ( Domperidone) 0.25 ml twice a day. Its a Gastric pro-kinetic which increases gastric motility and will prevent reflux. Also addition Of Junior Lanzol Syrup ( Lansoprozole) 5 mg once a day will be effective in treating Reflux. Whenever he vomits( Its more of regurgitation) , dont feed him for next 30 minutes. Be less vigorous after that in feeding, go slow. Also sometimes changing the formula feeds or switching to other feeds may cause marked improvement in symptoms. Feed allergy could also sometimes cause regurgitation.
Continue giving the medication for next 15 days, you will definitely notice improvement in symptoms.
Take Care Madam

Sir,As i told you yesterday that though my baby was joyful but his body was appearing warm to me...I took his temperature today morning and it was 100...and he also spit some milk today morning 2 times..So now i have given him Crocin Drops(1 ml) and also MOTINORM Drops(0.25 ml)...After this i fed him CERELAC around 70 ml and he took it well and burped also with no spitting...Doctor,i think he is allergic to bananas....I have noticed that whenever i start bananas to him, then after some days his temperature rises with Vomiting.etc..Here sir,in punjab, the climate is also every day changing...sometimes its hot and today it was cold and rainy day...So i have again put on his socks with full sleeve T-Shirt...
otherwise doctor,he is still active though in morning he was appearing somewhat idle to me....Pls revert back on the above issues and also suggest should i continue giving him iron drops, vitamin d3 drops and a to z syrup.....
Give calpol if temperature more tha 99.5 f
Detailed Answer:
Namasthe Poojaji
Apart from bananas, the culprit could be Iron , vitamin D3 drops.
If his hemoglobin has normalized then continuing Iron therapy is not required. Iron can cause gastritis and can also induce vomiting. Vitamins and nutrients present in diet are sufficient to take care of nutritional demands. I personally don't recommend it and have also not used on my own daughter.
As you already found out the culprit food( banana contains Tryptophan and may sometimes cause Vomiting), it can be avoided. Other fruits can take its place. No need for concern. Its a good idea to adjust the clothing according to prevailing weather conditions. Give him Calpol whenever his temperature is more than 99.5 F
Do mail me whenever you have any issues.

Sir,as per advise, today i started to give my baby crocin drops(1 ml) very 4 hours and also MOTINORM Drops(0.25 ml) 2 times. Also im feeding him nearly 70 ml after every one to one and a half hour.Till time he has not done any vomiting but his temperature is not coming to normal...sometimes the same is as low as 99.2 but sometimes its as high as 100.5...At present i have given him crocin drops at 7.30 pm and after 10 min again noted the temperature and it was 100...Doctor,how long will it take for the fever to come to normal??...Im worried because from march month onwards,he is not O.K with fever rising, falling accompanied by vomiting...2 days after he got discharged from hospital, his fever started rising, falling and then he started coughing with loose motion and vomitings....This thing should not happen so frequently....Im worried sir, what i should do??
pls revert on all the above concerns of mine..
Its likely to be non specific viral fever
Detailed Answer:
Namasthe Poojaji
Fever is not a disease but is symptom of underlying disease. The most common cause for fever is Infection. Respiratory tract is the commonest site of infection.
I would like to have additional details
1. Does baby have respiratory symptoms like cough, running nose, sneezing, wheezing or hurried breathing.
2. Is he accepting feeds well when the fever is subsiding( babies are cranky and restless when they have fever and may not accept feeds)
3. Are there urinary complaints: Excessive crying while passing urine, increased frequency of urine. Was Urine examination or Ultrasound done when the baby was admitted on previous occasion
4. Any rash or erruption on body?
Continue giving him feeds. Crocin drops can be given every 6th hourly ofr whenever there is fever. 15-20 minutes after giving crocin you can also wipe his body with a wet wipe. It will help in reducing the temperature.
In the absence of respiratory symptoms and baby accepting feeds well its likely to be non specific viral fever and will usually last next 2- 3 days.
Temperature control and maintaining hydration and nutrition is all that is required.
I can understand your concern from point of view of being a mother. Apart from professional advise , i would like to tell you that the parents need to be calm and composed whenever attending to illness of babies.Being a father myself , I can understand your concern. Even during ill health of my daughter i always try to remain calm .
Anytime you need any assistance, get back to me. I assure you replying promptly.
Do get back to me with the details

I again took his temperature and it was 99.3.Sir,as per the details asked by you:
1.No,he is not coughing or having runny nose though he coughs or sneeze very occasionally(once or twice).
2.Even during fever,he accepts feed well.Infact wants to have more but i feed him less because of vomit.
3.no,there are no urinary complaints and yes the ultrasound and other urine and blood tests were done and they were normal.
4.no,there is no rash and eruption on his body
but sir,he seems to be somewhat lazy, smiling very less, though he still picks up toys, plays with it,rolls here and there...Sir,you told about non specific viral infection...what exactly it is???Pls revert..

He should settle down in couple of days
Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms XXXXX
Its good to know that he is accepting feeds well. Feed him small quantity frequently.
In children , there is viral prodrome which presents with fever and there may o may not be respiratory symptoms and the symptoms get aborted because of immunity of body. The site of infection is respiratory tract and when no respiratory symptoms are present its known as non specific viral infection.
Also give him the following
1. To a cup pf milk add 20 Tulsi leaves + 1 spoon of turmeric + 2 gm fresh ginger + 2 spoon of sugar. Boil it. Filter it and feed him warm using watti and spoon. It will be helpful to boost his immunity..
The fever should subside in next 2- 3 days.

non specific viral infection
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Ms XXXXXXX
It's likely to be Non specific Viral fever. As his general physical examination did not reveal any abnormality there is no cause for concern. Do continue giving him antibiotic as advised.
One more advise would be to maintain him nutrition by him him adequate fluids and nutrients
One recipe which the kid will like is as below
Ingredients needed: Ghee( 2 spoons), Whole wheat flour ( 2 spoons) , Pista( 50 gms), Cardomom ( 6 in number), Almonds( 50 gms), Khajur( Dried dates 50 gms), water/milk
In a pan pour 2 spoons of ghee, heat it, add 2 spoons of wheat flour (Atta), cook it till golden brown on low flame till its slightly golden in color. Add 2 Cups of water or Milk and keep stirring it continuously making a thin water paste( same like sira consistency). To this add powdered mixture of rest of ingredients grinded in mixer ( pista, almond, khajur, cardomom).
Supplement baby breakfast with this recipe, and also can be consumed at night when baby is hungry. In this way her quota for milk will also be fulfilled.
As it's semi solid it will not cause regurgitation.
Get back to me with your number.

Meftal P suspension will be helpful
Detailed Answer:
Namasthe XXXXX
The fever is almost continuously present .
Are there any other complaints like
1. Excessive crying while passing urine
2. Any blood or mucous in stools
3. Any rash which has occurred over the body.
Any respiratory complaint like cough, running nose
4. Any aversion for light or bright light
5. Any refusal for feeds.
Presence of recurrent fever in the absence of any localizing signs of infection requires further investigation if the intensity of fever does not decrease.
Meftal- P suspension 2.5 ml whenever there is fever is worth trying.
Do keep me informed about the development.

Detailed Answer:

Let him sleep. Rest is more important. If you wake up baby from sleep they tend to be irritable. Excessive crying can also increase their temperature. Meftal P is Mefenamic acid which is anti inflammatory. When the baby wakes up feed him first. Giving medication to hungry baby may be counterproductive.
Also try giving him semi solid food as it will prevent vomiting and regurgitation.
In the absence of other symptoms the fever should resolve.

Meftal Suspn SOS advised,Few Investigations needed
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Ms. XXXXXXX
For fever you may continue with Linezolid syrup. However, give Meftal P suspension only during episodes of fever and not twice daily.
Going through the reports you have provided,
1. Coming to the blood picture it appears likely to be 'Iron deficiency Anemia of Infancy' which is more common in non breast fed children. His hemoglobin levels were 8.5 (as informed by you previously) and the current Hb level is 10.3. This shows he is responding to Iron therapy. Do continue Iron drops however, avoid it along with milk (calcium content of milk reduces iron absorption). Rest appears to be fine.
2. Elevation of Liver enzymes in the blood report needs to be further evaluated (though it is mild liver enzyme elevation) since it is associated with recurrent fever. The good thing is bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase are in normal limits. I would suggest you to get the following investigations done
i) Ultrasound Abdomen
ii) TORCH Assay
In majority of the cases it might turn out to be non specific elevation of liver enzymes. There is no need for any concern.
Keep me further posted regarding your son's health improvement. Do not worry. He will be fine soon and will start playing around.
Wish your son healthy life ahead.

Dr. Deepak Kishore Kaltari

Additional information required
Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms XXXXX
It would have been better if I could have clinically examined XXXXX.
I would like to have some more additional information about him
1. Does he not open mouth /resist taking anything while feeding?
2. Does he vomit immediately after feeds? Is the vomiting forceful or just regurgitation/spilling from mouth
3. Is he still having fever?
4. Does he still have loose motion?
In the meantime continue giving Domperidone. Also start Junior Lanzol Tablet 15 mg 1/2 tablet can be disolved in sugar water and given To Mr XXXXX. Lanzol is gastric acid suppressant and will treat the associated gastritis.
If the symptoms persists further clinical assessment by Pediatric Surgeon is advisable.
You can also try home made Ceralac. Following is the recipe
While this recipe is for just half cup powder, you can make in bulk and store in air tight and each time you want to use, add milk or water and also add mashed banana or chiku for taste.
For the malted magic mixture:
One fourth cup rice, washed and dried
One fourth cup whole moong (green gram), raw
One fourth cup whole wheat
One fourth cup whole ragi (nachni)
Soak the moong daal, wheat and ragi in separate containers for 6 to 8 hours.
Drain all the water and tie them in separate muslin cloth and allow them to sprout. Ensure to keep the cloth wet at all times by sprinkling water at regular intervals. Usually this takes 2 days in warm weather.
Dry roast the whole grains and rice separately on a tava over slow flame, stirring continuously till they are crisp and can be easily powdered.
Cool for five mins and combine all roasted grains. Rub them between your palm to remove all burnt skin and sprouts. Separate the burnt skin and sprout from mixture by passing through a sieve.
Grind the sieved mixture and rice together to make fine powder.
Cool and store in air tight containers.

Start Lansoprozole kid tablet
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Dear XXXXXX
Thats good to know that he is afebrile and is active.
If he is vomiting small quantity of feeds during burping and the vomitus is containing only food and no bile(yellow) then there is no cause for concern. Introduce Lanzol Junior tablet, he should definitely improve.
Message me back for any issues anytime and keep me updated about progress of Master Agastya.
