What Causes Fluid Pockets On Scrotum And Penis Post A Hernia Surgery?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Mar 2016
Question: I had inguinal hernia open surgery on my right side and all went well for several days. I developed edema after 3 days and pain came back. Now after a week of edema area expanding I have fluid pockets on my scrotum which extend to the end of the penis. My doctor says this is normal . He says the only way to diagnosis a problem would be to open me up again. I think a CTscan or other could help. Is this normal?

Brief Answer:
It is most likely a hematoma(blood collection) with surrounding edema.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,
I can understand your concern.
Such problems can occur after hernia surgery. Sometimes, when we dont put drains during surgery to remove the blood that oozes after surgery, that blood can get collected in the operated area and by gravity move down to the scrotum and root of penis. It is most likely a hematoma with surrounding edema. To confirm the same you could get an Ultrasound done which will show up the blood or fluid collection.
The management we usually advice is rest, compression to the swollen part and Tab Daflon 500mg twice daily or Tab Chymoral Forte thrice a day for a week.
The swelling will then come down and eventually disappear but that would take about 3 to 4 weeks in some cases. If there is pain or discharge from the wound then infection could be a possibility and you would require a course of antibiotics.
This is in brief the management of your problem.
