Question: I have been having a fluttering feeling in my stomach/esophagus area. I have a history of esophageal spasms, could it be that? I am already taking Protonix and Zantac but not really helping. any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Needs correlation, slight adjustment needed

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Esophageal spasm sometimes may be severe enough and may not respond to proton pump inhibitors alone. Sometimes non compliance to the triggering factors of underlying cause of GERD like smoking, weight gain, stimulants, chocolates, spices, binge eating, alcohol etc are there and they trigger these symptoms you are having. 8 % of cases self resolve with diet and lifestyle modifications only.

I would suggest trying increased dosages and modifying diet and lifestyle for acid reflux as it is the commonest cause. If still not responding, your doctor will consider you for other antispasmodic options like botulinum toxin, sildenafil injections, calcium channel blockers etc.

If medications fail to respond then surgical correction like POEM ( per oral endoscopic myotomy ) or simple myotomy would be done.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and don't forget to close the discussion please.
