What Causes Frequent And Painful Urination In An Elderly Man?

Question: My husband is 74 years old and in very good health. He didn't sleep well last night and got up 7 times to urinate, but could only urinate about 1 tablespoon full of urine. He has been sleeping on and off all day, and is asleep now. He has not eaten all day, although he has drank water. I asked him to go to the urgent care, but he said maybe tomorrow. His doctor only worked till noon today or we would have called him. I am worried, because he is sleeping so much. He said he has no painful urination or back or groin pain. Once before he had a bladder infection and I thought he was having a stroke. He didn't know where he was and what he was doing. I took him to the ER and they checked him out and tested his urine and found the infection. My daughter who is an MA said that is very common for people his age when they get a bladder infection. Once he was on the medication and IV fluids he was fine. That has been 2 years ago. What do you advise?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

I am very concerned that your husband is currently dealing with a urinary tract infection and. Please don't always have classic symptoms such as painful urination. The fact that he has been urinating so frequently and only at small volumes is very suspicious.

Urinary tract infection can sometimes progress and may cause generalized weakness, Fevers or chills and sometimes mental status changes.

One of the common reasons that older males developed urinary tract infection's is enlargement of the prostate.

It sounds like he needs to at least be seen by a local physician as soon as possible for a good physical examination, consultation and possibly your analysis to rule out infection.

If he truly does have a urinary tract infection and antibiotics can help to quickly resolve symptoms. I wouldn't hurt you to discuss this with him and hopefully he will be amenable to going in for the violation as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
