What Causes Frequent Bowel Movements In A Developmentally Disabled Person?
Question: My 43 year old developmentally disabled adult child is having stools 3-4 times a day (normally 1 per day). She has no warning when they are coming. They are not loose or watery. They are normal brown to dark brown. They are very sticky and hard to clean off her buttocks. There is no leaking of blood from the stool into the commode water. She has no fever and says her stomach is fine. She is not complaining of any other discomfort.
Brief Answer:
Pelvic exercises advisable
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern. For a person with developmental disabilities the neuronal network might not be functioning properly. That is the reason behind the stool incontinence is just the same. I do not know how well she responds to commands. But she needs to be instructed to alternately contract and relax her pelvic muscles (similar to what we do in an attempt to pass stool. This needs to be done a number of times a day. This will strengthen the pelvic muscles and would help in attaining better continence.
Let me know if I could help further.
