What Causes Frequent Bowel Movements?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 Jan 2016
Question: I have more than three bowel movements per day, but it is not diarreah. I do not know if this is normal, but I get bellyaches which I feel signal constipation, since I know my medication that I take causes constipation. I drink plenty of fluids, water, coffee, and tea to help to relieve the belly ache and to have a bowel movement which I do. But after each bowel movement, there is still a lingering bellyache which almost always signals a forthcoming bowel movement. I continue to drink fluids and continue to have normal bowel movements. The feces are sausage or hot dog shaped bowel movements, and are solid waste materials, and not watery or loose. Is all this normal or okay for me?

Brief Answer:
Change in bowel habit

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on the history that you narrated, stool for occult blood should be done. If its positive then combined with change in bowel habit, it is an indication for colonoscopy to rule out the chance of malignancy. Fluphenazine (Prolixin) can cause GI discomfort though you are taking Prilosec. Stool routine examination plus for ova and parasite should also be done. In case these investigations are normal then the likely cause is IBS for which sucralfate , eucarbon (containing antispasmodic and activated charcoal) and mebeverine can be advised. If the bellyache is severe then hyoscine butylbromide can be advised after ruling out peritoneal irritation by examining the abdomen. Please consult your doctor in this regard.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
