Posted on Mon, 15 Jun 2015
Question: Hi, I recently got nexoplanon march 20, and after my first menstrual cycle everything seemed normal with spotting here and there and now 2 months later, I've been spotting every day, in the morning red then later in the day brown discharge with a foul smell. Im wonder if I have some type of infection or ia this just another side effect, I recently started having break outs. This is the first time I've ever been on BC, im just trying to figure out what's going on with my body, I'm 25yrs old.

Brief Answer:
spotting is side effect of nexaplanon...explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to healthcaremagic.com,
It is to be understood that as you have opted for a progesterone implant nexplanon, the hormone levels for progesterone take about 2-3 months to settle down and hence the woman may experience irregular spotting in the initial 2-3 months after the implant . But this usually subsides on its own and then she is usually symptom free.
The bleeding can be in the form of light serum blood mixed discharge and spotting in themed cycle. Usually non -foul smelling. But if there is a foul smell in the vaginal secretions then there is a likelihood that you may be suffering from a vaginal infection which needs to be evaluated by your physician with a per speculum exam and a high vaginal swab to rule out infection.
If the spotting is in excess then you may discuss teh option of using antifibrinolytics like tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding which can be used thrice a day for 3-5 days.
I hope i have answered your query in detail,
Wishing you good health,
Regards
