What Causes Frequent Urination While On Elavil?
I have had a health problem for nineteen years. If I don't take elavil, during the day I have to urinate each two hours. During the night, my belly hurts, and I need to urinate five to six times. Nineteen years ago, I went to see an urologist. I had many exams and nothing very important was found. His diagnostic was an overactive bladder. For fourteen years I tried many medications for that kind of problem, without success.
Four years ago, I went to see an other urologist and his diagnostic was chronic pelvic pain. He prescribes me elavil 25 mg. I take two pills before bedtime. With elavil, during the day, I have to go to the washroom each two hours and half. When I feel I have to urinate, I feel a big pressure in the bladder, and I cannot wait too long before going to the washroom. During the night, I go to the washroom two to four times. The pain in my belly stops me from sleeping profoundly and I have to get up to urinate which relieves the pain enough so I can go back to sleep. Elavil seems to work better than the pills I used to take for overactive bladder, but I still don't sleep normally and each morning I wake up tired before going to work.
I'm 53 years old, I don't drink alcool, I don't drink coffee or tea.
Is there a solution?
Thankyou

You have to continue with Amitriptyline
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have urinary symptoms typical of Over Active Bladder syndrome since almost 19 years and have been investigated thoroughly and was diagnosed to have Over Active Bladder Symptoms (OAB)
However the drugs that are commonly used have failed to give you any relief from symptoms but you are getting results with Amitriptyline 5o mg to your satisfaction and getting relief from symptoms to some extent .
Amitriptyline is a anti psychotic drug that is commonly prescribed in depression but I have also been prescribing Amitriptyline to some of my patients who do not not respond to routine anti muscuranic drugs like Darifenacin or Solifenacin
To be true it is very difficult how Amitriptyline works but at the end of the day what ever works for the patient without any side effects is best to be prescribed ,
I would suggest you to continue with Amitriptyline
I do understand that I have not suggested you anything extra ordinary but fact remains fact and it is in the interest of the patient to accept the facts for benefit of the patient which can not be proved scientifically .
Please do write if you have any query .I would be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards.
