What Causes Hallucinations When On Morphine And Gabapentin?
Question: Upon discharge from the hospital following a total knee replacement, my wife was prescribed Norco 5-325 (Acetaminophen; Hydrocodone) every four hours for the pain. (She also takes Gabapentin for neuropathy.) While in the hospital, she was on a PCA morphine drip for first 24 hours, then they switched her to oral Roxicet (Oxycodone and Acetaminophen), and I think there was some overlap because she was REALLY out of it for about half a day. She said she had hallucinations. Now, five days post surgery, she's having bouts of shivering and having moderate - severe twitching/jerking of arms & hands & even some very slight facial tics. I now have to hold her glass when she drinks or she spills the entire contents, she drops the phone when she's on it, etc. She's very drowsy and sometimes disoriented when awake. I was observing the one tablet every four hour prescription starting at hospital discharge on Friday at 5pm, then, when these symptoms seemed to get worse and she said her knee pain was a four, tapered to .5 pill at 6pm tonight and nothing since, but she's still severely jerking. Of course, I'll call her surgeon tomorrow morning, but I'm concerned since that's 9 hours away. I couldn't find muscle spasms/twitching/jerking specifically as a Norco side effect.
Brief Answer:
These are side effects.
Detailed Answer:
Hello, I have been gone through your questions and understand your concern.
As you might have been informed the hallucination, drowsiness and lethargy are a common side effect of oxycodone/acetaminophen.
The tremor is a side effect of gabapentin, which is reported to happen from 6 to 10%.
You should also know that there is reported an interaction between these two drugs.
I think you should stop your wife taking this treatment because of the side effects after consulting your doctor.
Talk to your surgeon about switching to other pain killers.
Hope this answers your question; please feel free for further question.
Wish your wife the best health.
