What Causes Hard Lump On The Centre Of Chest Area?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: Hello. Hard bone lump, dead centre of chest. Appears to be on the sternum angle. It's been there years. Feels exactly like a spine bone - this they are called vertebrae. Smooth with rounded edges.

I have a round hard boney lump right in the centre of my chest, on my sternum angle. It's smooth, hard and feels like bone (it could be bone?) it feels exactly like a back bone/spine disc! It's doesn't protrude from skin, but I can can feel it with my fingers.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Could be bone or Pectus carinatum

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

This could be bony deformity of the chest called Pectus carinatum, or pigeon chest.

You can get an Xray to confirm if it is bone.

This condition can be seen in calcium and Vitamin D deficiency, Rickets, Heart disease or also normal variant.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

That you very much for your reply, I decided to have a good proper feel of this bone since I posted and I can update that:

It is indeed right in the centre of my upper chest

It is more flat than I first thought- with downward sloping, very even edges, almost a perfect dome I guess.

The left side is a little higher but I have an awful slouched left shoulder, always have, it falls very forward, bad posture indeed.

I can feel my ribs/other chest bones almost slot into the back of it.

It is not sore at all, and def solid like a bone, very similar bone feeling to my vertebrae or infact the tip of my elbow bone .

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to care for me, offering your advice.
