Question: hello
my 84 year old mother has had a stroke 8 days ago her head aches and she gets pain down her left leg she is on patches to help the pain.also her appetite is very poor and she sleeps a lot.The day of the stroke she was able to move her fingers and toes the following two days she moved her left forearm up and down three times but nothing since is this a good or bad sign of regaining something back? Also having just got over pneumonia two weeks earlier her energy levels will be low.I just wish we could get more food down her although she has shown some slight interest recently nothing seems to move along fast enough.

Brief Answer:
Recovery after a stroke is gradual,by rule.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

I have all the concerns for your mother, dear friend. But,Recovery after a stroke is slow and gradual,by rule.Nothing can change overnight.Recovery usually takes many months. It is usually not a complete recovery.Infact, old age is not a favourable factor for recovery. So,we have to wait for the time to come,to see how much she recovers.
Please continue regular medicines and proper physiotherapy,as these are the cornerstones of management.Movement in limbs will slowly recover with proper physiotherapy exercises.

On the same lines, her feeding behaviour will also improve slowly.Initially, she should be maintained on liquid and semisolid diet.Later on,she will pick up with the solid diet as well.

I can understand your emotions, but that is how the epidemiology of stroke behaves.

Hope that I have answered your query. If you have some further queries,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.

Regards

Dear Dr XXXXXXX panwar
Thank you for your reply and replying in a positive manner.
We haven't been told anything about the stroke other than she was treated within 30 minutes of the stroke and there was no bleed.
Over the last two or three days (this been day 9 and who knows what each day will bring?)she does appear to be interacting a little bit more and she is starting to take some of the build up drinks and ice cream and a little trifle.
All good signs towards recovery but she still isn't well and has a long way to go and the little improvement so far isn't enough to make me feel things couldn't go the opposite way very quickly.
Thanks for listening XXXXXXX
