What Causes Headaches Along With Body Pains And Painful Eyes?

Question: My daughter has had flu like symptoms for 4 days, severe throbbing headaches, and body/muscle aches. I am worried about meningitis because she said that her brainstem hurts and her eyes hurt.....How do I know it is serious enough to go to the emergency room? She also has an extremely sore throat.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Viral infection more likely

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on healthcaremagic. I have gone through the details and it seems more likely to be a case of viral infection with associated sore throat. Meningitis is a serious condition where the activities and feeding of the child becomes reduced and the general well being of the child is affected. In case of a viral infection the child is otherwise well except when the fever comes. Lethargy and being sick and miserable are conditions that would warrant a visit to the emergency. The neck and eyes hurting could be present in both and I would strongly insist that you get the child examined by a pediatrician if not in the emergency room. In the meantime, give her paracetamol to control the temperature and gurgling with lukewarm water to relieve her sore throat.
