What Causes Heart Palpitations After Using Oxybutynin For Bladder Infection?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Jun 2014
Question: My 88 year old mother is having chest pain, heart palpitations, over all lack of energy, weakness and shortness of breath. Also poor appetite. A Heart Cat last week showed no narrowing or blockage of arteries leading to and from the heart.
She is taking Oxybutynin for on going bladder infections, and has at least one side effect of dry mouth. Since Oxybutynin reduces muscle spasms of the bladder and urinary tract, Could the Oxybutynin be causing her heart, a muscle, to malfunction?

Brief Answer:
sublingual nitrate, stop oxybutynin---------------

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to the forum.
Your question is very valid.
Oxybutynin, being an anti-cholinergic can reduce the pumping capacity if the heart and alter the rhythmic function of the heart.

Your description sounds more like ischemic pain to me ( heart attack).

Nevertheless, the next right step would be.

1. To STOP OXYBUTYNIN.
2. To administer SUB- LINGUAL ISOSORBIDE DI NITRATE- 5 MG TO START WITH.

If pain does not subside in less than ten minutes, it is wise to attend the EMERGENCY ROOM.

Sincerely,
