Question: My mother is 83 years old. We are trying to get her to drink more water. But it seems like water gives her heartburn. This does not happen when she drinks sodas. Do you have any suggestions. I know water is better than sodas for her to drink

Brief Answer:
Its a sign of too loose connection between stomach and esophagus.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

This simply indicates that she has loose connection between the stomach and esophagus (the muscle) and when the pressure in the stomach rises (usually when you fill it with water while lying down) she feels heartburn. This is a very common thing.
From the other hand, soda contains carbohydrates which can neutralize a little stomach acid, so no heartburn appears.

There is no simply solution for that.
Generally it is good to do not drink when lying down, do not drink two hours before sleeping. And give her small dips of water. She may also try antiacids (like Omeprazole 20 mg once a day). But still, if you give her too much water at once, heartburn will appear.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
