What Causes Heavy Nosebleeds During Menopause?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Jun 2016
Question: Hello doctor . I have read somewhere that nosebleeds are more common during pregnancy an was wondering if this is also true during menopause. I am 53 and for the past year have a three or four spontaneous and heavy nosebleeds. I never had them before. I use ibuprofen quite a bit and have taken it most of my life for menstrual cramps and headaches including migraines. I am on a maintenance dose is alprazolam,1 mg. per day. I am not sure if that is a type of blood thinner. Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to dry mucosa.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The heavy nosebleeds during menopause are less likely to be due to hormonal reasons and more likely to be due to dryness of nasal mucosa. Raised blood pressure and bleeding disorders are other causes that need to be ruled out. Ibuprofen use can aggravate the nosebleeds. It is best to avoid taking pain killers and go for an evaluation in case the bleeding is recurrent.
