What Causes Heavy Spotting During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Sat, 6 Aug 2016
Question: I tested positive with a home pregnancy test over 3 weeks ago. By my calculations (my boyfriend and I haven't had sex often), I'm 7 weeks. Just a little over a week ago I started spotting. It was a mucas like texture with a little brown in it, like a tinge of blood. Over a few days this has turn into bright red blood that isn't heavy but constant. I've had off and on cramping and have passed a few bloody clots, but they're not very big. My cramping worsened this morning so I went to urgent care, they weren't equipped to see me. Planned parenthood scheduled me for an ultrasound but sent me home too. I don't go back for the ultrasound for 3 days, should I be worried? Other things worth mentioning are inner thigh pain (like when I menstrate), my breasts aren't sore anymore, lower back pain right above my left buttocks that goes straight through to the front of my abdomen and shoulder pain. Shoulder pain and lower back may be related to the gym this week, I'm unsure.

Brief Answer:
Only ultrasound can confirm healthy pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I appreciate your concerns.

About one in four pregnant women experience vaginal bleeding in their early pregnancy. In about half of these women bleeding stops and pregnancy continues. This information is for you your reassurance.

The back pain and shoulder pain could be due to the gym. If this bleeding and abdominal pain worsens, then this is not a good sign.
Having ultrasound after 3 days is okay. But in the meantime, if the bleeding or pain worsens it suggests inevitable miscarriage. In that case you must visit the ER immediately.
Only ultrasound can confirm healthy pregnancy.

I hope this is helpful.
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.
Best wishes,
Dr Rama
