What Causes High Blood Potassium Levels?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Oct 2014
Question: My blood potassium is high (5.8). It has tested at this level twice. The lab says normal is 3.5-5.3. My fasting glucose is 100, with normal listed as 65-99. My chester is great. Blood pressure awesome. I take adderall, 15mg bid for ADD. I do not take supplements that have potassium. I am a 46 yr old female with two children, ages five and nine. I am really worried! What additional labs or tests need to be done? My dr office doesn't seem concerned at all!

Brief Answer:
5.8 level is not significant.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear welcome to HM.

I admire you for positive outlook.

Very glad to see you.

I understand your concern.

Aderall has active ingredient of amphetamine. It is most common drug that used for ADD.

Reviews and literature said mild elevation in potassium occur while on aderall.

Usually it is common if you are on aderall since 5 to 10 years and common in middle age women. It is more common in female than male.
Usually Machanism is unknown to everybody.

5.8 level is not that much significant. So I agree with your doctor.

It is just above normal and no need to worry.
In this case no additional investigation require.

Just to regular check up at every 3 months.

No problem with vitamin supplements.
Stop drinking if possible.
Sugar is mild elevated. Blood Glucose may also reason for elevated potassium. So try to control it by eating food with less sugar.

In short no need to worry. Just do routine check up.

If you have a query then feel free to ask.

Happy to help you.

Thank you. Take care.
