Question: I am a healthy daily exerciser, and went in for dental implant surgery, but the dentist refused because he said my blood pressure was dangerously high. after taking halcion and oxycodone (instructed to take to relax prior to surgery) my blood pressure was 145 over 85. what might be possible causes? I have been taking norco daily 7.5/3.25, not sleeping well--have sole custody of my 4 1/2 year old twin girls and under alot of stress

Brief Answer: stress can cause an increase Detailed Answer: HI, thanks for using healthcare magic There are different possible reason for high blood pressure. If your blood pressure is usually within normal range (the top value less than 130 AND the bottom value less than 80), then the most likely cause would be conscious or subs-conscious stress related to the procedure. Any other stress in a persons life can also cause increase in blood pressure values. There is a type of hypertension called white coat hypertension where a person's blood pressure goes up when they visit their doctor. This normally refers to visits to their general doctor but can occur with any type of medical visit such as a dentist. You would need to check your blood pressure in the coming 1 to 2 weeks to see if it remains elevated. If it normalises to the values given - good. If not then it is possible that you have hypertension. In most persons with hypertension no specific cause can be found- they have what is called essential hypertension. Blood pressure rises as persons age and there may also be some hereditary component. In others there is another cause for the high blood pressure such as hormonal problems , kidney disease, neurological conditions. If the pressure remains high when you recheck in the next week to 2 weeks , then you need to consider visiting your doctor for an evaluation. He or she would confirm that it is high and , depending on the value, possibly suggest medication. I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

thank you. I was curious if you think taking norco (hydrocodone) daily might cause increased blood pressure as well as lack of sleep

Brief Answer: Hydrocodone would cause a decrease in BP Detailed Answer: HI there are some medications that can cause increase in blood pressure but the opiate family of drugs such as hydrocodone normally would cause the blood pressure to decrease not increase. Pain medication such as aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen can sometimes cause increase in blood pressure. Anything that stresses the body such as emotional stress or lack of sleep can affect the blood pressure and cause increase values. Please feel free to ask any other questions
