What Causes High Eosinophil Count?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Jun 2014
Question: I self ordered a wellness panel blood test because I thought my electrolytes might have been out of balance because of exceptional leg cramping. They were fine but my eosinophil count came back at 35%. The results were confirmed by microscopic examination. I know that allergies and parasites are the primary causes of high eos, but this seems really high. Do allergies and parasites make it go this high or is it likely something else? I read that organ damage can happen at 1.5 x 109/L and I have 2.4 eos (absolute). I don't have a primary doctor, but I have an appointment as a first time patient in 11 days. Should I go straight to a hemotologist because my organs are at risk, or do I have the time to wait?

As below:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Besides allergies and parasitic infections, there are many other causes for a very high eosinophil count.

2. These include autoimmune vasculitis (such as Churg Strauss Syndrome), fungal infections, Blood disorders (bone marrow production problems), drug induced and sometimes of unknown origin (idiopathic).

3. There is no harm in waiting two weeks. There may be no organ damage for many months, however the duration of the existing high counts is not known.

4. Blood tests, imaging and a full work-up will be required to arrive at a diagnosis.

5. It is imporatant to tackle any parasitic infection before attempting to use steroids.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
