What Causes High Iron Content In Blood?

I got a blood test done recently and it showed an elevated iron level. The doctor said to get tested for this genetic iron disorder (not sure of what it was called) and said it may be hereditary. If that's the case, she said I would need to do this treatment similar to donating blood. However, I got blood work done about 5 months ago as well and that showed everything to be normal. Does this mean the recent result of higher then normal iron can be temporary, or that I might be able to reduce it without medical treatment? Because as I said, I was tested only about 5 months ago and everything was normal. Along with urine tests.
Hemochromatosis
Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking
I read your question and i understand your concern. It appears the doctor is suspecting iron overload in you also called hemochromatosis. Hereditary genes in caucasians are the commonest cause for it. Regarding normal work up 5 months back, they may not have tested you for iron as that is not a routine test and done only if suspected .
Wait for your doctor to confirm the diagnosis and then you can discuss the treatment strategies with him. Blood removal also called phlebotomy is mainstay of treatment Iron chelation can also be offered. Meanwhile avoid iron and multivitamin supplements containing iron. Avoid vitamin C and also avoid alcohol or eating raw fish. Try to drink tannin rich tea as that is supposed to reduce iron stores.
I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and don't forget to close the discussion please.
