Blood Potassium is important in maintaining normal heart rhythm and high Potassium can lead to dangerous arrhythmia.
Potassium is excreted through the kidneys. The commonest cause of high blood Potassium is a defect in the excretion of Potassium in the urine. This occurs in deranged kidney function as in renal failure. High Potassium also occurs with blood pressure medicines like ACEI or ARB group, Potassium retaining diuretic like spiranolactone.
Fruits and fruit juices are rich in Potassium and those with high blood Potassium should be careful.
