What Causes Hot Flashes After A Hysterectomy?

default
Posted on Fri, 11 Jul 2014
Question: I am 51. I had a hysterectomy at age 32, with the removal of my left ovary at that time, due to endometriosis. I then had my right ovary removed at approx age 43, and again had endometriosis. I am now starting to experience hot flashes. Am I going through menopause all these years later? Could I still have endometriosis? I was first diagnosed with endometriosis at age 19. If this is menopause, what kind of symptoms can I expect?
thank you

Brief Answer:
Possibly due to menopause

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.
Usually after removal of both ovaries, woman will enter into a phase of surgical menopause.
But other tissues of the body like fatty tissue can produce estrogen, that may delay the appearance of symptoms of menopause.
The symptoms of menopause can vary from person to person.
Usually at the beginning of menopause woman can experience symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, vaginal dryness, urinary problems etc.
Hot flashes can subside soon without the need of medication.
If they are annoying and severe, you can consult gynecologist and go for treatment.
The possibility of endometriosis is less, because usually the endometrial tissue will regress in the absence of menstrual cycles.
