What Causes Hypersalivation With Post Nasal Drip?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Aug 2016
Question: Hello -- my wife has had a recurring issue with lots of saliva, which makes her have to swallow frequently. This comes and goes, and may be associated with mold in our house (I have also nasal drip that comes and goes, without any cold; it's been about two or three years with it). She gets canker sores pretty often. This last week she's gotten a pretty big patch on the palate that looked like a blister, red all around, with a yellowish patch inside. That patch has peeled off -- dead skin. But it is still red there. It had been hurting when she ate. She has never been a smoker or a drinker. She is also a very bad hypochondriac, and thinks of the worst things first. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Assure her that this is common and not a cause for worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. A common cause of hypersalivation is oral ulcers. Use a local ointment such as 5% amlexanox and rebamipide tablets. In addition the most common cause for hypersalivation include acid reflux, stress, allergy, vitamin / zinc deficiencies, and drug-induced.

2. A trial with medication for the above conditions should be taken. Tests for mold allergy should be done. Damp areas in the house should be bleached.

3. Rare causes include auto-immune disorders, neurological disorders, heavy metal poisoning and so on. These will require a detailed evaluation by a physician.

4. Assure her that this is common and not a cause for worry. Careful evaluation and treatment will help control this.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
