Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: For the past 1.5 years my blood pressure has been increasing, yesterday 153/95. I also have a recent tingling in my arms and hands, mostly the left also have now got ridges in my thumb nails, and my eyes have started to itch and eye drops only cause them to leak quite a bit. I sweat very easily and lots of water, this has been for four years. I'm kinda wondering what is going on. My doctor asked me to stop using salt and to exercise, but I get quite tired and need to nap a couple of times a day. I happen to be 72 and do enjoy being active, but that is gradually disappearing.

Brief Answer:
Nutrition and hydration improvement necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Normal blood pressure for your age can be up to 140/90.
2. At times, mild increase is not to be worried about. I am not sure, whether you are on medication for high blood pressure or any other ailments. If not, not necessary to start. If yes, dosage change maybe necessary.
3. If not on medication, salt restrictions, and weight reduction along with regular moderate exercises like brisk walking will be helpful.
4. Nutritional deficiencies maybe present. Do get a hemoglobin and thyroid hormone profile evaluated. If normal, good hydration is essential.
5. Tingling sensation indicates possible neuropathy, due to Vit B-12 deficiency. B-12 supplements along with vitamin B-complex supplements will be helpful.
6. Avoid exposure to dust. Wear protective glasses. As there is no continuous watering, not to worry.

Get hemoglobin and thyroid tests. If normal, need to look into salt and weight reduction along with moderate exercises and Vitamin B-complex supplements.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
