What Causes Increased Blood Sugar Levels While Recovering From Pneumonia?

default
Posted on Fri, 9 Jun 2017
Question: I am recovering from pneumonia. additionally I am a pre-diabetic type 2. Before I got sick my blood sugar was hanging in around 100 to 120. However since I have been sick my blood sugar is well over 200 hundred. I do admit that I have been drinkng lots of fluids, most of them juice, consuming lots of cough drops I assume they are laden with sugar. Is my blood sugar issue a result of all of the above and it will return to normal for me, or have I turned the corner and something else has happened and my blood sugar is out of site.

Brief Answer:
About blood glucose levels in stressful events;

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your concern carefully.

Prediabetes or Diabetes is increased in ''stressful'" events of organs.

It happens due to the increased levels of cortisol ( the hormone of the stress) that rises the blood glucose.

Usually, we recommend our patients to increase the dose of treatment in these cases and of course, to follow a strict diet without carbohydrates.

In most of the cases, the blood glucose gets back to the previous levels, once the stressful situation has gone away, but in a few cases, higher glucose levels may persist.

So, I would recommend to eat a low carbohydrate diet and monitor the blood glucose. If they persist higher, you should see a physician to start treatment for Diabetes.

Hope the information will help. Feel free to ask further.

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
