default
Posted on Fri, 26 Sep 2014
Question: My nose is inflamed on the top and inside. Very painful inside and hurts to touch outside. Could it be a cold sore, fever blister ? I am a diabetic on metformin 500 mg 1 a day. I have had shingles shot. I have been consuming sugar products due to retirement parties. I have 2 tabs of valacyclovir 1 gm left from prior fever blister on lip. Am considering taking because of extreme pain.

Brief Answer:
It may be Acute vestibulitis of nose.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your query.
In my opinion, you might be having infection of the hair follicle present in the vestibule of your nose.
This us very painful condition.
It's commonly seen in diabetic patient.
If I were your treating doctor, I would have prescribed penicillin antibiotics + anti inflammatory medicines like paracetamol + diclofenac combination drugs twice daily for 3 to 5 days. Please keep your sugar level under control. If not, infection can spread rapidly to cheeks, lips and cause cellulitis.
All these are prescription medicines, so I would advise you to consult with the doctor and get treated. Empirically, you can take anti inflammatory medicines like paracetamol + diclofenac combination drugs twice daily for pain.
You can finish the course of vancyclovir.
Does not look like shingles, as your already on medications.
Hope my answers have helped you.
Thank you.
