What Causes Intermittent Acute Headache?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Nov 2014
Question: my wife has been getting sharp pains in the head for the last five days. The pain comes and goes. It seems to be topical. The pain sensation feels as if it's outside the skull. In the skin. Mostly in back of the head. She also had what looks like welts or hives on her forehead (near the temple) and on the eyebrow. Almost look like insect bites. It occurs several times daily. Has not gotten better. What might be causing the pain? And could it be related to the issue on the eyebrow and forehead ?

Brief Answer:
Pains you're describing are most likely TAC's

Detailed Answer:
Good evening. My name is Dr. Saghafi and I'm a headache specialist and neurologist from the XXXXXXX OH region of the world.

I'd need a bit more information on this problem but my first impression as you describe the pains, their short duration, location, and the fact they come on several times daily goes to a type of headache called paroxysmal hemicrania which is a specific type of headache and is part of a larger type of headache that we refer to as a Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalgia.

Has your wife had headaches either of this nature or any type in the past? How old is she now? Any headaches while growing up?

What's the duration of the pains? Are we talking, seconds, minutes, hours? Any other symptoms to mention such as nausea, vomiting, sound or light or smell sensitivity, ringing in the ears.

I don't think these headache pains are related to the lesions in front although if there any chance I could see some pictures I'd feel more comfortable saying that.

I take it you haven't had her looked at by anybody for the hives or welts either? It would be good to know whether those lesions are truly insect bites or are they something else. Maybe you can take pictures of them and upload them to my attention.

If you feel this information has helped you please consider leaving some written feedback and a STAR RATING of this encounter and also would you kindly consider CLOSING THE CONSULT if you are done with questions and comments. If not then, I am gladly standing by for more questions or responses to questions that I asked.

Otherwise, I look forward to answering any question from you at the following link:
