What Causes Intermittent Dizziness And Discomfort In The Back Of The Neck?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Aug 2017
Question: I have had dizziness off and on for a long time. Usually at its worse in the morning when I arise from bed. Lately I have also had discomfort in the back of my neck and was wondering if the two symptoms are related. If I lay down with say a harder pillow that puts pressure on the back of my neck it seems worse. Always feel better when I'm up and moving. Blood pressure is ok

Brief Answer:
Possible diagnosis:Cervical spondylosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic for your health concern

Cervical spondylosis can cause neck pain, stiffness and dizziness. Cervical spondylosis occurs due to age related wear and tear of cervical spine. This can affect the blood vessels going through back of neck and supplying the brain resulting in dizziness.

CT scan and MRI of cervical spine can confirm. the diagnosis.

Management- You can take Advil for pain. Muscle relaxant like cyclobenzrapine can relieve the neck stiffness. Sleep on comfortable bed and pillow. Avoid sudden movement or rotation of neck as it can trigger dizziness. If dizziness is too bothersome immobilization of neck can help.
Physical therapy and stretching exercises are also important part of managing cervical spondylosis.
