What Causes Intermittent Pain In The Back And Armpit?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2016
Question: Hello Dr. I don't know if you can see the symptom checker thingy...but if not here goes. Intermittent stabbing pain on right, in my back and kind of around under my right arm. It is made worse by movement. Sometimes it hurts to breathe, but not always. This will go on a few days and then disappear. Then it will return suddenly and we go thru another few days of it. I am relatively active and outside a lot. I have been diagnosed with 2 thoracic disc ruptures...mild. I have had lumbar laminectomy in 1989 and 2 anterior disc fusions at levels 5, 6, & 7. Of course I have forgotten the level of the thoracic problems. Would they cause this type of pain? Wish I could be of more help. Thank you very much.

Brief Answer:
Can be muscle spasm or ruptured disc.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The intermittent pain on the back and under the right arm can be due to a muscle spasm or due to mild nerve root compression due to ruptured disc. Taking rest and oral muscle relaxants will provide relief. You can do a hot compress and apply local analgesic gel also.
Do start with back strengthening exercises under the guidance of a physiotherapist after the pain subsides to have a long term relief.
I hope this answers your query.
