What Causes Intermittent Pain In The Stomach?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 May 2017
Question: My husband has had stomach pain off and on for about a week, currently he says that it hurts in his lower stomach and that it feels like there is pressure. I am not sure if this is just indigestion, but these symptoms have been lasting a while and is becoming concerning. I gave him peptobismal on two different occasions and he said both times it made it worse, the pain and the pressure in his stomach. Is this still just indigestion?

Brief Answer:
Most like Enteritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query,
Have gone through all your details and appreciate your concern.

Most likely there is infection inside the body.
The infection your husband is having is termed medically as Gastroenteritis or stomach flu.In gastroenteritis the mucosa of the intestine is severely inflamed causing symptoms like loose stools, indigestion,Nausea and pain .Most of the time its viral however some times it can be bacterial also.

Tests suggested-
Ultrasound abdomen to rule out inflammation of abdomen(conditions like Divwerticulitis).
Stool test for bacterial or protozoal infection
Fecal calproctin to rule out intestinal inflammation.

Most likely stomach flu is viral and is self limiting. However antibiotic therapy can be given in case its bacterial or protozoal.

Treatment suggested-
Start taking Fybrogel or metamucil. It increases bulk of stool and improves digestion.
Start taking a good over counter probiotic daily. It will gradually improve digestion. They are rich in good bacteria which assists digestion.
Take lots of banana,Apple and peaches.
Drink lots of fibrous juices.
Take light and easily digestible food.
Antibiotic therapy could be given as per the reports of investigation.
Dicyclomine can be taken fer spasmodic pains along with Nexium 40mg.

Thanks.
