What Causes Intermittent Right-sided Numbness On Head And Burning Sensation In Ear?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Mar 2015
Question: I have a numbness on the right side of my head, just above the top of my ear. Sensation comes and goes; seems to be associated with stress or excitement. Sometimes my ear has a burning sensation.
I am 61 years old, my 2week avg BP135 over 80. I do work out 30mins, 3x per week. (Work outs don't bring on numbness).
I take Fish Oil, Prevastatin 40mg, Amplodipine Besylate 5mg, Omeprazole 20mg Daily.

Brief Answer:
auricular nerve irritation

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question. It sounds like you may have an auricular nerve irritation. That is the nerve that innervates the skin around your ear. It would be best to have your doctor take a look in your ear to make sure that you do not have a mass or lesion in the ear canal. If the sensation becomes severe you may need an MRI to look at things more closely. Sometimes with this type of nerve irritation a medication like gabapentin can calm down the nerve endings and provide some relief. It does not sound like anything serious but best to see your doctor and get it checked out to make sure.
