Brief Answer:
Several possible causes

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction as you yourself suggest could in fact be a possible cause for the twinges that you mention. Usually though it has some residual symptoms in between the twinges as well, some persistent pain or on opening and closing jaw, popping or locking sensation etc. Usually antiinflammatory pain killers are helpful such as ketoprofene.
Another possible cause could also be trigeminal neuralgia which can cause sharp, lancinating pains on that side involving usually the cheek. It can be triggered by masticating, speaking, touching the cheek, brushing your teeth. Anticonvulsants are used as initial treatment.
If your pains are more around the ear an ear infection must also be excluded which would need antibiotic treatment.

If the pains persist a physical exam by your physician can give some more clues as to the cause and appropriate treatment.
