Question: I have been having problems with Acid Reflux and sinuses infections. I have now developed a intolernce to alcohol as well many foods - it feels like I get plugged up from anything I eat. My sinus infections are not responding to any antibiotic treatments. I moved to Vancounver Island - very damp - my symptoms grew progessively worse. What could this be?

Hi
I am Dr MIttal
I have read your query

I feel that the main issue of yours remains the unresolving sinusitis.
It is a prominent disorder that bothers many people, especially in damp cliamates.
The treatment of sinusitis is never easy. Complete resolution always takes time.

Also gastritis is a thing that needs dietary control as well as medicines. From the query, I feel you are taking tablets but not making any dietary restrictions, including alcohol.

As for sinusitis, as I said, its an infection which resolves very very slowly and needs persistet efforts on your part. I usually do not suggest steroids or antibiotics unless you have developed a fever. I prefer to suggest to my patients steam inhalation at least 4 times a day and metazoline group of nasal drops sos like otrivin. I have found that continued steam inhalation as very frequently resolved the issue and its a natural therapy with practically no side effects that are common to steroids and antibiotics. The nasal drops will help clear the sinuses and nose when there is congestion.

As for gastritis, you can try taking a PPI like neksium during the day, followed by a Ranitidine 150 mg at bedtime. This has been documented to help as the ranitidine helps clear the acid that is released suddenly when the Neksium effects start wearing off. But thats only one side of it. Dietary inhibitions are important. Taking coffee, tea, alcohol and fizzy drinks disturbs the stomach more. Non veg and spicy food will worsen the situation. Same goes for smoking.
Only a strict vegan diet may be able to help you in severe gastritis.

In fact gastritis can be a cause of your continued sinusitis, as the excess acid irritates the pharynx when we sleep and make it prone to small and minor infections which can continuously affect the nasopharynx causing the recurrent sinusitis.

Please feel free to contact me for more details or any clarifications.
I hope that the information helps you.
Best of luck

Hello - I have made changes in my diet a few years ago. I prepare raw foods! And i cook organic chicken, wild salmon. I eat 70% raw. Never eat bread, pasta or sugar or any pop or carbonated drinks. I drink only 1 cup of coffee per day followed by hot lemon water. I am under a large amount of stress and i am trying to change this. I quit alcohol! i quit my smoking habit of 1 pack per week 65 days ago. I do eat very healthy. I am not over weight. I will try the steam. I also just seen a naturopathic physician yesterday - so im using both doctors a medical one and natural one. I am sure i have a fungal infection - what is your suggestion for a fungal infection? How long for recovery - generally speaking- 2 months ? 2 weeks? 6 months?

Hi
I have read your response.
As I said before, I would still suggest avoiding non veg diet.
As of time, I would suggest avoiding stress also. It is a known cause of hypergastritis as well. Yoga and meditation are 2 good ways of avoiding it. I would suggest these 2 before switching to stress buster medicines.

As for the fungal infection, it is more common in people who are immunocompromised in some way, even diabetics. Since the query does not suggest any such thing, I doubt that this is the cause. However, confirmation can be done either by an ENT doctor or by an MRI of the brain and skull.

As for the recovery time, you should start getting the relief very soon. But exact time period cannot be commented upon. usually by a month, the effects are definitely seen.

I hope that the information helps.

I will be glad to respond.
