Posted on Tue, 20 Jun 2017
Question: My mother is 82 and her pottasium levels vary between 4.2 to 6.5. Creatinine and sodium is 0.70 and 135. She had developed involuntary twiching of spine and grinding of teeth when her potassium was at 6.5 and detected. K bind XXXXXXX of 15 mg twice a day for 4 days was used and in due course twiching stopped. After 10 days again twiching started and pottasium was at 5.5.
Does rise in pottasium do this twiching and involuntary movement of the jaw ?

Yes variation in levels of potassium is responible for her symptoms.
Montor her potassium levels every day.
Start giving her K bind twice daily.
Make sure to cut all extra sources of potassium like fruit juices.
Check if she is on any medication likeace inhibitors etc.
Get a creatine clearance and glomerular filtration rate test done to rule out possibility of renal problem.
An ultrasound abdomen should also be done.

Potassium levels at a age of 83 should not exceed 5.1mil mol/l.

What would be the optimum number of k binders needed to stablise her pottasium wich the last blood report showed at 5.4 and after 4 sachets of k binders decreased to 5 as per the most recent blood test..
Recommenced with 2 daily k binders now and total given upto date are 7 numbers. How many total k binders should be given prior to blood test with gfr test..
