What Causes Irregular Menstrual Cycles When Under Stress?

Question: Hi my periods have recently been irregular and I have not had a period in 10weeks. Now I'm away from home and cannot go to a doctor. I've done a pregnancy test its negative and wanted to know is there anything I can do to start my period. I have done three tests all negative and I've had slight cramps but no period. As my doctor is back in Dubai I'm in UK and wanted to know what I can do in order to get my period. I won't be going back home till end of August which will then be another 7weeks and don't want to delay it till then. I've tried approaching a private doctor but they told me would have to go to my own doctor . So would really want to try and resovle it and if there any medicine I can get private.
I don't have any illnesses or health issues. Or any major stress so thinking it might be something to do with hormones

Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
You actually need to have a complete evaluation for irregular cycles, and only then try medication to induce or bring on a period.
The workup should include -
1. Internal exam by an OB - GYN.
2. Pap smear
3. Pelvic transvaginal ultrasound scan.
4. Hormonal levels - FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT, DHEAS, Free testosterone, Lipid Profile.
Conditions such as anxiety, stress, weight fluctuations, unaccustomed exercise, erratic eating habits, lack of sleep, alcohol, smoking, external hormones etc - all these can affect the menstrual cycles.
Generally, periods can be kickstarted by taking progesterone withdrawal.
In this method, progesterone pills ( Deviry, Meprate, Norethisterone ) etc are taken for 5 days ( dosage depends on your body weight ).
Once you stop, you menstruate within a week.
Again, it is better to have a workup and then start these tablets, as it is unwise to start them without knowing the reason for absent / irregular period.
YOu can wait until you go to Dubai, and have an evaluation before taking them.

Hi thank you for your reply. Previously the latest my periods have been delayed is 3weeks then the doc gave me the medicine you stated above. The only reason i am more worried this time is because it is much longer without a period and yet i am not returning to dubai for another 6 weeks and thibking then it will four months without period and this might affect my fertility and things as next year we will be planning to have a second child .

Well, if you can get this medication, and want to take it without a proper prescription, you may.
But you can wait , that will not affect you fertility.
And you might have a period in the meantime also.
