What Causes Irritability, Anxiety And Mood Swings While On Prozac And Adderall?
Question: I suffer with depression and anxiety. My psychiatrist just start me on Prozac about 3 weeks ago. I also take adderall 20 mg 2x daily and xanax as needed. I feel irritable, anxious, moody and just plain horrible. Is my body trying to adjust to Prozac or is this just a horrible combination of meds?
Brief Answer:
risk of serotonin syndrome.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
Prozac and adderall when taken together can cause serious drug interactions.
There is a risk of serotonin syndrome.
Body adjusts to prozac in 7-10 days and not 3 weeks.
You are feeling irritable moody and horrible.
I would suggest you to consult your doctor immediately for examination. Prozac must be discontinued and changed, if needed.
Hope this helps.
Feel free to ask further.
Take care.

I have been on other anti-depressants, Lexapro, Viibryd. Are their any anti-depressants that may not cause serotonin syndrome ? I told her I was concerned about this and she said not to worry. Is there a true test for this syndrome or just symptoms? Also, how long to recover from this
Brief Answer:
bupropion would be my choice.
Detailed Answer:
Almost all antidepressants have such interactions with adderall.
Ideally any antidepressants with adderall should be started in low dose.
The symptoms due to interactions be monitored. If the person tolerates the combination, then it should be continued.
I would suggst addition of bupropion to adderall. It will also have synergistic effect with adderall on ADHD.
Theoretically, it can lower seizure threshold but in my clinical experience, I have not seen any patient reporting seizures on this combination.
There is no definitive tesr for serotonin syndrome. It is only diagnosed based on symptoms.
I think these symptoms should decrease in severity as soon as you stop prozac and should almost disappear in a week or so.
Kindly discuss this with your doctor.
I wish you well.
Thanks.
