Question: my husband has had an itchy rash on his chest, back, arms for over ten days. He is being treated with prednisone and cortisone creams. the rash is not improving. he had the routine allergy test patches on his back but does not show any allergies existing. My concern is could this be caused by an internal condition. he will be seeing his gastro doctor this week because he has digestive problems. CAn digestive problems cause a rash?

Brief Answer:
Liver pathology may causes; need some details to guide you better

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. ordinary digestive problem does not cause itching but on the other hand a pathology involving liver may causes generalized pruritis(itch). But before going to such causes we try to rule out common causes and most common cause for generalized itching is allergy from insect bite, dust, pollen or some particular food. As you husband has undergone allergy patch test and it came out -ve but still if you can answer some questions regarding it would help me to guide you better:

1. any recent history of insect bite or contact with dust/pollen after which itch started?
2. Does itch start after going to bed and after waking up?
3. is he allergic to any particular food? does itch start after taking some particular food?
4. is there any past history of similar complaint?
5. have you noticed yellow discoloration of his eyes?
6. is he lethargic or complaint of loss of appetite?
7. is he diabetic, hypertensive or having any other chronic illness?
8. is anyone else in the family also having similar complaint?
9. can you elaborate digestive problem please?

I will be looking forward for the answers to conclude the discussion in the best interest of yours.
Thank You
