What Causes Itchy Small Bumps In Genital Area?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 May 2016
Question: Hi,
I was diagnosed in 2014 with HSV1. I assumed it was from a cold sore that I had on my lip. I have researched that it is rare for HSV1 to relocate to the vaginal region but is possible. My boyfriend and I had oral sex(me being the receiver). A few days later I got this terrible terrible terrible itch. I scratched and scratched. (Im sure some skin came off with it) I went to see my primary doctor on friday and she told me it sounded like a yeast infection and gave me some diflucan. The itch went away but it's back again, not as bad. Today I went to Urgent care and had a pelvic exam. She said she saw two very very small bumps. They are not painful just itch. She said it could be herpes. I am so worried. My boyfriend get these things sometimes that look like canker sores or cold sores. He has herpes whitlow also. Is that HSV1 OR HSV2? She said I have bacteria vaginosis and a yeast infection. It's just on my out labia. I am freaked out! What are other reasons there could be a sore? It was only two and she said they were very small.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of herpes is less. If possible kindly upload the photos.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for the extreme itching and small bumps at the genital area. After analyzing your query it seems to be related to candidal infection of the area. All the symptoms are indicative of the same.

It is quite common in young females who are sexually active. It could be aggravated by improper hygiene. Sexual intercourse (specifically of unprotected nature and oral sex) is a predisposing factor for the same.
For the possibility of herpes: As per your description you have only two tiny bumps. In herpes we find multiple bumps which are actually painful rather than itchy. So the possibility of herpes is less. If possible kindly upload the photos of affected area.

I suggest you following important measures to get early relief:

- Wash the area for 2-3 times with simple water.

- use mild soap only and be very gentle during washing the area.

- Wear cotton clothes and cotton undergarments to be changed two times a day. Do not wear any synthetic or tight garments.

- Keep yourself away from hot and humid climate.

- Further at night time do warm water compresses.

- Do not sit continuously for long hours.

- Avoid unprotected intercourse till complete recovery.

- If I were your treating dermatologist then would have suggested to apply plane anti-fungal creams such as “Clotrimazole” or “Ketoconazole” or "Sertaconazole" or "Amorolfine " in a very thin amount so that it should not be visible to the naked eye.

- I would have also suggested to take oral anti histamine like loratadine or levocetrizine two times a day under medical advise if there is moderate to severe itching is present.

-Don't try to scratch or rub the area as can lead to further aggravation of the problem.

"Wish you good health and early recovery from the problem"

Thank you for your answer! Tonight, the itching got worse. It felt like my whole vagina was on fire. My mom suggested I used the monistat cream on the outside and it just made it worse. The ER Dr. Stated it didn't look like herpes to him, but to wait for my urgent care culture results to come back. I am really hoping that this is not herpes. Would a fungil infection cause my whole vagina to have a burning sensation if it was just on one side? I tried to take a picture but it's not visible on the camera(bad quality). I have had Bacteria Vag. before and never remember having the burning feeling. It's driving me insane.

Brief Answer:
Less likely to be herpes. Relax and don't worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome back and thanks for your further follow up.

In my opinion it doesn't seems to be related to herpes. As I explained you in the previous mail that herpetic lesions are multiple and are more painful than the burning sensation. It is more likely to be related to fungal infection.

I reassure you that as per my experience of tour description the condition is not related to herpes. So relax yourself. Follow the suggestions given in the previous mail. Do give me a follow up of your report.

My best wishes for your earliest recovery.

With regards,

Dr Sanjay Kanodia

I am still waiting for my results. I just called the Urgent Care that I was seen, as it has been 72 hours and I haven't heard from anyone. They told me that they were waiting on the rest of my labs and I would hear from someone once all of them came back.
