What Causes Knee Cramps Post Intake Of Gluformin XL For Diabetes?
Now my Doctor suggests me to take Tab Teneglyn 20 mg or tab Tendia 20 mg or Tab teneza 20 mg one tab daily. Does these tablets are better option than the first two as above. The drug in these tablets is different then the one used in Glycomet or Gluformin. Does these new tablets have any side effects.
I may suggest continuation of Metformin.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your question.
Noted your concern.
Type 2 diabetes is due to
- Insulin resistance: Increased insulin demand of body.
- Pancreatic dysfunction: Inability of pancreas to release insulin proportionate with demand of body.
Tab Glycomet SR or Gluformin XL contains sustained (prolonged) release metformin.
Metformin is the world wide accepted first line drug in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes except in certain situations.
In sustained release formulation of metformin the shell of tablet is made of specific material.
There is formation of micro-pores in shell after entering in digestive tract with gradual release of drug inside.
Outer shell of tablet may or may not get dissolved completely and may get excreted in stool giving impression that entire tablet has got excreted without effect but the fact is that it is only shell and whatever the drug inside is got released inside digestive tract.
If your blood sugar is controlled with use of metformin alone I may not suggest discontinuation of it or adding another medicine.
I may suggest to do HbA1c and accordingly may change medications if required.
In usual situation I suggest 1500 to 2000 mg of metformin daily in divided dose as this is considered as the optimal dose in reducing insulin resistance.
Metformin when used alone very rarely cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level).
Tab Teneglyn 20 mg or tab Tendia 20 mg or Tab teneza 20 mg all contain Teneligliptin 20mg which is a newer antidibetic very effective I may prefer this if metformin alone in optimal dose fails to control blood sugar level.
Cramps below knee may be due to many causes for that I may suggest -
Investigations like-
Complete Blood Count.
Renal Function Test including Electrolytes.
Ultra TSH.
Vitamin B12 & D3 level.
I may suggest use of Vitamin B12 and D supplements.
Hope this helps you.

Just wait and watch with regular follow up with diabetologist.
Detailed Answer:
Continue current medications as are you taking.
Answer to your question one by one-
1) Will I remain diabetic life time? –
Its answer depends upon
- Family history of diabetes.
- Your life style.
- Time.
2) I want to discontinue medicines for Type 2 diabetes. Whether reduction of weight by 5 kgs help? Currently I am 80 kgs.
Again it will depend upon above 3 mentioned facts and blood sugar control (Fasting & Post-prandial blood sugar level and HbA1c) after loosing weight.
3) What other precautionary measures to be taken if i stop the medicines after reduction in weight by 5 kgs?
- You have to maintain lost weight.
- Diabetic diet consult near by dietician who can plan diet for you considering your BMI and food habits.
- Regular exercise.
These are the questions one can not answer directly.
One need to observe course of disease (Physical examination, blood sugar control, medications dose & number of medications).
Instead of thinking about it you should concentrate on weight reduction, diet, exercise and regular medications and regular follow up with your diabetologist time will reveal answers of all these questions.
Hope this helps you.
