What Causes Late Periods Inspite Of Having Negative Pregnancy Test?

Question: Hi. Im a mother of one. Few weeks ago I had really itchy arms and chest. After having a blood test for allergies I was told I had an high white blood cell count which meant infection and was given antibiotics. Everything else came back fine, iron, calcium, hormones, thyroid etc. The past month I have had unprotected sex with my bf, we used the pull out method all times. My period is now one week late. I have taken several tests which have all come back negative. The whole week I have had cramps on and off like it was going to start but then nothing. Also they are not as severe as my usual pms. Breast only started to swell slightly two days ago, not sore but nipples stay erected and seem to be darker in colour. I was supposed to have drinks on friday night but after one drink I instantly felt sick and had a headache. Also have constipation and cold feet at night? Last night I had some chocolate and experienced severe acid reflux until I took some tums. Today is easter, I had a long drive to see the family, I have never experienced motion sickness in my life but it was a struggle to make it all the way there as I felt sick (went white as a ghost) and it was the same on the way back. Because the tests came back negative I havebeen convinced my period was late because of infection. My doctor is away for a week. Could these symptoms be pregnancy or is it due to infection? I plan to ask for a blood test to rule it out but if I was pregnant it should have come up? With my son, I found out before I had even missed a period.

Brief Answer: not pregnant if pregnancy test negative. Detailed Answer: Dear XXXXXXX Thanks for writing to healthcare magic. If the urine test for pregnancy is negative on several occasions then you are not pregnant. Usually by a week of delayed period most cases of pregnancy show clear positive on urine test except those patients with irregular periods where we may have to wait longer or do a blood test. You mentioned feeling sick but tests being normal. This happens with viral infection where you feel sick , have reflux, body ache which is also severe in viral infection. this can cause delay in period in absence of pregnancy. The best action now is to take symptomatic treatment for the illness and wait for period for another week. You may get your period . If pregnancy test negative for a week then you can ask your doctor for a prescription for norethisterone to induce a period. Please write back if any queries. Thanks Dr Bhagyashree
