What Causes Left-sided Knee Pain And Severe Hip Problem?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Jun 2015
Question: I am having a lot of pain in my left knee which was replaced 3 years ago. The Dr. I went to took an X-ray that
showed my left hip is totally bone-on-bone and would need replacing. He called it referred pain and that the
knee pain was actually coming from my bad hip. What is referred pain and how can I be sure the pain in my
knee is truly the result of my bad hip.

Brief Answer:
Knee pain can be due to the hip problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
It seems that your hip joint has also undergone an arthritic change. This can cause a change in the posture thus causing an extra stress on the knee joint resulting in a pain. The pain caused in the knee can be due to the hip problem. This can be confirmed by getting a cortisone shot or hyaluronic acid injection in the hip joint. If it provides you some relief in the knee pain then it is likely that a hip replacement will give you a complete relief.
I hope this answers your query.

I specified in my write up under 'Medications Tried' that a cortisone shot to the hip
has been performed. Why did you suggest this in your response. Did you even
read what I put down? Obviously not!

Brief Answer:
You can try hyaluronic acid injection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
I am sorry to miss that. If the cortisone shot has not given the desired relief then you can try hyaluronic acid shot. It can help in reducing the symptoms due to arthritis. In case that provides relief then it is likely that your symptoms are due to hip arthritis.
Hope my answer is helpful.
