default
Posted on Thu, 12 Feb 2015
Question: I am a 64 year old diabetic woman, recently I have started feeling pain on the upper left side of my stomach, just under my left breast. I feel the pain radiating to my back and it is uncomfortable to sit or sometimes lay down. I also noticed that the area is a little tender a slightly swollen. I am seeing my doctor tomorrow, but I am scared to death of what this could be. Can you give an idea what this could be and if it can be very serious?. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Looks to be costochondritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history about the Medications and the pain at present. I have read it and understood your Problem.

By the description you have given- Pain - left upper abdomen - just under left breast - radiating to back - uncomfortable to sit or lay down - local tenderness and swollen - scared - seeing Doctor tomorrow... wants to know probable diagnosis...
I Can think of the following problems:
-Costocondritis: as there is local swelling and tenderness.
-If this is of recent origin, it can be due to Herpes as there is radiation to back , but since you have not mentioned about the rash, this is least possible.
-Cardiac problem - Get an EKG done although this is again a very rare possibility.
-Internal problems of the abdomen : there can not be local swelling and tenderness of there is something internal problem like Pancreatitis or colitis or so. Yet it would be advisable to have ultrasonography of the abdomen.

This is most probably costocondritis and Your Doctor on Clinical / physical examination can get to the proper diagnosis and advise further investigations as per His / Her findings.

I hope your blood sugar levels are within normal limits.

I hope this answer helps you to get to the root-cause and get a proper diagnosis , reduce your stress as stress and anxiety can increase such pains; so relax till you are diagnosed.
Till then apply warm compresses, take rest, calm down, do not be anxious.

Please feel free to ask for more if you need any clarification of if you feel that there is a gap-of-communication.
